Important

Use this chart to compare sizes, cup depths and references of Padovani Music Tuba mouthpieces. Equivalencies with mouthpieces from other brands are approximate references. Even mouthpieces with similar dimensions may provide different playing sensations and responses due to rim shape, cup depth and profile, throat, backbore and other design characteristics.

Special Series

Low Register Series

The 2TB, 3TB and 4TB models are part of the Padovani Music Low Register Series, a line developed for a more specific tonal concept. With larger internal dimensions, deep cups and increased airflow, these models provide an extremely powerful, heavy sound with a strong emphasis on the low register.

They are especially recommended for Contrabass Tubas, players who frequently work in the lower register, and musical situations where great volume, weight and a strong presence in the low frequencies are desired.

Low Register or Conventional Line?

The Low Register Series is designed for tuba players seeking great volume, weight and emphasis, especially in the low register. The other models in the line offer a wider variety of sizes, allowing players to find different balances between sound volume, response, articulation, comfort and versatility.

Which model should I choose?

The size currently used by the player is a good starting point, but the choice should also take into account the type of Tuba, the register most frequently used, desired sound, resistance, embouchure comfort and musical application. The references shown in the chart are intended to make this initial comparison easier.

American or European Shank: will the mouthpiece fit my Tuba?

Tuba mouthpieces predominantly use two shank standards: American Shank and European Shank. Despite the dimensional difference between them, both standards are compatible with the vast majority of instruments. Unlike the Small Shank and Large Shank standards used on trombones, an adapter is normally not required.

The American Shank has a slightly smaller diameter. Therefore, when an American Shank mouthpiece is used in a Tuba with a European-standard receiver, the mouthpiece tends to sit slightly farther into the instrument. Conversely, a European Shank mouthpiece used in an American-standard receiver tends to sit slightly farther out.

This difference is small and, except for instruments or receivers with specific dimensions, does not prevent the mouthpiece from being used. Any effect on intonation tends to be minimal and can easily be compensated for using the instrument's normal tuning adjustments.

Padovani Music Tuba mouthpieces use the American Shank standard, which is currently widely used in Tuba mouthpieces and instruments and is especially common in Brazil. Therefore, with most instruments, the mouthpiece will fit normally. If you have any questions about a specific Tuba model, our team can help verify compatibility before your purchase.
